The Tears Did Not Stop…

From Producer, P.Wu “We were doing  interviews with MPs on a voluntary basis when  we asked them what their most memorable experience with the first generation leaders were. There were many interesting responses and one of them was from Josephine Teo. "She told us how Minister Mentor Lee, during her first overseas trip as an MP with him, took great pains to explain that the future of Singapore was not pre-determined. We would not continue to succeed if we left Singapore on auto-pilot mode. And though there were many challenges, with unity and strong leadership, Singaporeans can alter the course of our development to create a better future for all. This statement gave the video production team some food for thought,  as most of us can never imagine an “unsuccessful”  Singapore. At the same interview, we also asked Ser Luck what kept him awake at night. With tiredness that his bloodshot eyes could not hide, he said, “I worry that I have not done enough for Singaporeans.”  These thoughts, and personal sentiments shared with us by leaders such as Boon Yang, Cynthia and Denise,  impressed us in the production crew –even though most of us were not Party Members.

We discussed these thoughts and feedback with Tuck Yew, Grace Fu and Zaqy (amazingly, all of the MPs and Ministers we spoke with were personable and totally down to earth). Tuck Yew pointed out clearly that MM’s tears in 1965 did not stop at tears.

Firstly, the tears energized an entire generation of people and leaders into action, to fight for Singapore’s freedom from poverty, from illiteracy, from poor health and sanitation. Hand wringing tears without action does not solve problems. The PAP as a party of ACTION has the passion for the people at the heart of its psyche.

Secondly, the tears continue on in the next generation of leaders in terms of passion, commitment and a deep sense of duty to the people of Singapore. It was in this context that we picked the song from Michael Learns to Rock – “Love Will Never Lie” – to accompany the video. Our interaction with the leaders of Singapore left a deep imprint on the production crew – they are people who try not to make a big deal about the work they do, or the sacrifices they make. It is interesting to observe their depth and humility close-up. We hope this video, “The Tears Did Not Stop…” will bring to the viewer’s awareness the passion and commitment that we discovered whilst preparing the video
