4 neighbour complaints a day

  Dated : 14-01-2010

Every year, the Housing Board receives an average of 1,600 complaints of disputes among neighbours, or about four complaints a day.

But this annual average between 2006 and 2008 works out less than 0.2 per cent of all households in HDB estates, said National Development Minister Mah Bow Tan, in a written reply to a parliamentary reply to a parliamentary question from Dr Lam Pin Min (Ang Mo Kio GRC).

While HDB tries to assist,” It is not possible for government agencies… to be responsible for resolving private disputes between two neighbours”, Mr Mah said.

“Ultimately, (they) need to be resolved privately, with the help of community mediation or through the legal process if necessary.”

He also said the HDB is reviewing its penalty framework to take more decisive action against residents who persist in their antisocial behaviour despite warnings and counselling.
